1A. What did you know abut art criticism when you started the class? How comfortable were you with evaluating your work or the work of others?
When I started this class I didn't know very much about art criticism. I didn't know what to look for in someones art to help improve it. When I would blog about my work I had very little to say. When we would evaluate other student's artwork I was unsure of what to say. The things I noticed about their art were insignificant and unhelpful. I would never really plan my art and would always just wing it. I didn't critically think about what to do.
1B. How has your understanding of art criticism changed during Art 1? How has the way you use art criticism when you make or view art changed during the class?
The way I use and understand art criticism has developed a lot during this course. I never thought about what the art needed to be better I would just do it and hope for the best. I understand more about realism and values now, which helps me improve my work. For example, the water color painting that I made during the boot camp unit would've been disastrous if I had attempted it before I took this class. I wouldn't have considered foreground or background the way I would now.
2A. What are some of the many important or useful things you learned in Art 1?
During Art 1 I learned many useful things to make me a better artist. In the boot camp unit I learned something during every part of it. I used to have little understanding of how to get clay to stick together and add depth to it. I learned many techniques for texturing water color such as saran wrap, salt, and blotting. Drawing has never been my strong suit, but now that I better understand lines and values I'm able to draw something that's half-decent (that's exponentially better than my drawing before this class).
2B. In order to make this class a better learning experience there isn't much I would change. It's a very free class that allows you to use creativity so the experience you get depends a lot on you. I think more group things would be good because other people give you new ideas that you never would've came up with on your own. Since this class is so open to what you want to do, you could do a group project if you wanted to, but maybe it would be better if there were more projects assigned that are specifically for a group.
